  • You must be a national of, or hold recognized refugee status in, one of these countries – Angola, Botswana, Eswatini (Swaziland), Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia
  • You must be ordinarily resident in one of the above-mentioned countries
  • You must be applying for, or presently enrolled in, a Master’s or PhD degree at a South African university
  • You must hold, or expect to obtain in the application year – a good honors degree (at least second class upper division or equivalent) if you are applying for a master’s program, or a good master’s degree if you are applying for a PhD degree
  • You need to demonstrate a sustained commitment to social justice through a minimum of 2 years of active engagement in activities that contributed to addressing educational, social, economic, cultural, environmental, or human rights challenges in their community, country, or region. Such engagement could consist of, but is not limited to, community-based initiatives, advocacy, mentoring, teaching, public service, civil society or NGO involvement, professional practice, social impact research, or leadership in activities that promote equity and inclusion.
  • You must be pursuing studies or research that contribute to understanding, responding to, or addressing a significant/important social justice challenge affecting Southern Africa
  • Those who are applying for a PhD program must have identified a supervisor (or prospective supervisor) who has shown his or her agreement in principle to supervise the proposed research, and submit a draft research proposal as part of the application
