Information Regarding the Canon Foundation in Europe Research Fellowships
The philanthropic, grant-making institution, The Canon Foundation in Europe, is very active in promoting international culture and scientific relations between Europe and Japan. Each year, the foundation offers grants of up to 15 fellowships to exceptional European and Japanese researchers. Japanese fellows are expected to do their research in Europe, whereas European fellows are expected to carry on (pursue) a research period in Japan.

These fellowships are offered for a minimum period of 3 months and up to a maximum of 1 year. All research fields are supported. There are no restrictions or limitations. At the time of application, the applicants are not required to be currently enrolled or employed.
As far as Canon Fellows from Europe are concerned, they are free to select their host institutions and hosts in Japan, and the same freedom is offered to Japanese fellows coming to Europe. Research fellowships of the Canon Foundation could be applied for when an agreement on co-operation and a research plan is reached between the proposed host institution and guest researchers. - All Europeans (including the UK, Turkey, Israel, the Balkans, and the Baltic countries) can apply for these fellowships
- Candidates must also have obtained a minimum of a Master’s or PhD degree within last 10 years of applying to the Canon Foundation.
- The committee will also consider applicants who have obtained their qualification more than 10 years ago, as long as they provide further supporting information in their applications
Note: Priority will be given to those who are going to Japan and Europe for the first time.
Stipend (Financial Coverage)
Financial coverage will be offered to successful candidates. Selected research fellows will be offered up to 30,000 Euros per year and pro rata for different periods. They will have the option to decide what costs the grant can be used for example include travel, living costs, books, research costs, etc. There are no restrictions.
