Danubis Young Scientist Award 2025 (Austria) – Award Ceremony in Bosnia, Prize Money & Italy Visit

There is no doubt in mentioning that research awards are taken very seriously and happen to be much prestigious and honorable for every researcher. It is a matter of prestige and pride for those who are conferred with these awards. Young Scientist Awards are quite popular around the world. This award refers to many prestigious awards recognizing the achievements of engineers and young scientists both on a national level and within specific organizations. The examples of these awards include The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (Ireland), The Young Scientist Award (Korea), and CSIR Young Scientist Award (India). There is another big one from Austria called the Danubis Young Scientist Award. Call for Nominations – The Danubis Young Scientist Award 2025

Under the joint venture of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM) and The Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research (BMBWF), 14 young scientists receive grants annually with the Danubius Young Scientist Award (one for each country which is part of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Croatia, Bulgaria, Germany, Czech Republic, Moldova, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania.

Note: It must be noted that the country of the nominating institution is the determining factor, not the candidate/applicant’s country of citizenship. Thus, the award is open to all applicants (young researchers) within each institution regardless of their background.

This award was launched in 2014 and focuses on the scientific work and the young researchers’ talents. It enhances the scientific community’s visibility in the region. Besides, the Danubius Young Scientist Award encourages young scientists to get engaged in the scientific examination of the multifaceted issues, plus questions particularly relevant to the region of the Danube.

Eligibility Criteria for The Danubis Young Scientist Award

The award is open to all scientific disciplines. There is a criterion that needs to be met if one would like to apply for.

  • There is no age limit, but the applicants must have obtained their highest degree, such as a Master’s/PhD, within the last 5 years (= after 1 January 2020). Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will not be accepted.
  • It must be noted that the candidates are not allowed to nominate themselves, rather nomination must be done by the candidate’s hosting scientific institution, such as a research organization, academy of sciences, university, etc.)
  • On the part of the hosting scientific institution, it can nominate a maximum of 5 candidates, however, the 5 candidates have to be from different departments, faculties, institutes, or research groups within the organization. In case the 5 applications are submitted, the ones which are from management or the rectorate of the organization will be prioritized, since it will be assumed that those applications have gone through an internal coordination procedure.

Selection Procedure for The Danubis Young Scientist Award 2025

Based on the below-mentioned criteria, an international expert jury will make an assessment of all incoming nominations:

  • Thematic relevance of the scientific work to the problems/issues of the Danube Region
  • Innovative approach and scientific excellence to the academic work
  • Candidate’s potential such as participation in scientific projects, integration in international networks, experience in teaching, publication history, etc.)
  • Scientific work relevance beyond national borders

The assigned jury will then determine the final ranking list. Highest ranked (highest ranking candidates) will be recommended to bag this award.

Award Carmony and Prize Money

There will be an award ceremony for the Danubis Young Scientist Award, besides, each winner will be offered the prize money. Each winner will be provided with a prize of 1350 Euros.

Additionally, the award ceremony will be held on 13th November 2025 in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Details of this ceremony will be announced in due course. Apart from the above, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) keeps supporting, thus, it is envisaged that the winners will be offered an attractive opportunity of visiting one of the JRC’s facilities in Ispra, Italy in 2026.

Required Documents

Interested candidates are required to submit all documents in English (exception is available for degree certificate) and as three PDF files.

  1. Letter of recommendation from candidate’s institution (maximum of one page)
  2. One single document about the applicant/candidate having the following details:
  • Summary of the scientific work (such as dissertation, thesis, scientific publication, journal article, etc.) and its specific relevance for the Danube Region
  • CV containing publication list of the applicant/candidate (maximum three pages)
  1. Certificate of the applicant or the candidate’s highest academic degree
