Categories of Getty Foundation Grants
There are three main categories of grants available:
Scholar Grants – These are assigned to established researchers and professionals who obtained their doctoral (PhD) degrees before 1st September, 2022, and hold a distinguished record of publications plus continuing professional activity. These research grants are offered at both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center
Postdoctoral Fellowships – These are particularly intended for those individuals who have lately completed their doctorate (PhD) degrees, providing them with the chance (opportunity) to further their research at the Getty Villa and the Getty Center
Predoctoral Fellowships – These grants cater to PhD students, offering them the resources and time vital to focus on their research at the Getty Center
Annual Theme for 2026-27: Provenance
The Getty Scholars Program of 2026-27 seeks proposals centered around the theme of Provenance. Since provenance research has begun gaining prominence within art history, it utterly addresses necessary questions surrounding the transfer, ownership, and transformation of art objects across geography and time.
Eligibility Criteria for Getty Foundation Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026-27
- All nationalities are eligible for the fellowship program
- Researchers in the fields of arts, humanities, or social sciences can apply
- Applicants of the predoctoral fellowship must have advanced to candidacy in their PhD degree by the application closing date, and should also expect to complete their dissertations during the period of fellowship
- It must be noted that the candidates who obtained their PhD (doctoral) degree within the last 5 years (after 1st September 2021) need to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship
- And those who obtained a doctoral (PhD) degree more than five years before (prior to 1st September 2021) need to apply for a Scholar Grant at the Getty Villa or the Getty Center
- It is worth noting that after a waiting period of six years, recipients of the previous Getty Residential Grant are eligible to reapply for another research grant in whatever category they happen to be eligible for and are interested in
- Getty staff, who are serving presently, and their immediate family members, are not eligible to apply

Financial Coverage for Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships
Successful applicants will receive the following coverage:
- Stipend for Predoctoral Fellows will be $30,000
- Stipend for Postdoctoral Fellows will be $35,000
- They will have access to resources and collections of the Getty Research Institute
- They will be able to participate in lectures that happen weekly and in intellectual community activities
- They will have global education opportunities
- Successful candidates will be provided with healthcare and housing benefits
Scholar Grants Recipients – Under these grants, the recipients may be in residence at the Getty Center from 3 to 9 months and will receive varying stipends as mentioned under:
- 3 Months Residency – From September to December/January to March: $21,500 Stipend
- 6 Months Residency – From September to March/January to June: $43,000 Stipend
- 9 Months Residency – September to June: $65,000 Stipend
Note: The grant also consists of a workstation at the Getty Research Institute or the Getty Villa, a travel stipend, research assistance, and an apartment in the Getty Scholar Housing Complex, in addition to access to available healthcare options. The mentioned terms have taken effect as of July 2024 and are subject to future revisions.
Getty Scholars Program at the Villa Recipients
These recipients could be in residence from 3 to 6 months, and the coverage will include:
- 3 Months Residency – From September to December, January to March, or April to June: $21,500
- 6 Months Residency – From September to March, or January to June: $43,000
Note: This grant will also carry an office located at the Getty Villa, a travel stipend for the recipients’ relocation to Los Angeles, research assistance, an apartment available in the Getty Scholar Housing Complex, plus an available healthcare option. These terms have been applied as of July 2024 and are subject to changes in the future.
