PhD Program (PhDs at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in the UK)

It is a four-year program that has been designed and created by prominent academics and industry partners. The program includes a wide range of taught modules at Bristol and Sussex in year one leading to a 3-year research project phase. Postgraduate researchers at Bristol and Sussex will benefit from:

  • Developing complementary expertise (skills) like commercialization and science communication which are vital for industrial and academic excellence.
  • Guided and self-inspired learning with a wider range of available PhD research projects.
  • Access that is available to an international network of top-rated (world-class) industrial and academic collaborators.
  • Experience in practical application in addition to a sound theoretical quantum physics understanding.
  • The industry trips to the United States of America to visit research labs and companies working in the field of quantum.
  • Financial assistance (support) for industrial and academic secondments.
  • A cohort approach to learning, making the students learn from each other in a fast-evolving field.
  • The opportunity and funding for attending national and international conferences.
  • The access to a wider technology base and state-of-the-art facilities available at Sussex and Bristol.

Master Class

There will be a big benefit for postgraduate researchers at Sussex, they will also benefit from a new exciting Master Class ‘Microwave Trapped-Ion Quantum Computing’. The world-class leading quantum computing theorist Gerard Milburn (FRS) will lead the Master Class along with a software engineer formerly working at Google (Joe Swainston). There will be two talented PDRAS – one with a focus on quantum gates (Chris Knapp) and the other one with a focus on electronics engineering for quantum computing (Pedro Taylor Burdett).
