Location of the UNHCR Internship

Internships are offered to eligible candidates at various locations, including UNHCR headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), Budapest, the Global Service Centers in Amman, and Copenhagen, or at field country offices. It should also be noted that subject to the approval of their managers, interns could telework within or outside of the country of duty station.

Length of the UNHCR Internship Program 2025

UNHCR may start the internships at any time during the year and often last between 2 to 6 months. There is a possibility of an extension as well, such as:

Internships might be up to 8 months for full-time, or
They could be up to 12 months for part-time

Eligibility Criteria for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Internship

These internships are open to all nationalities. All qualified candidates without distinction are encouraged to apply. UNHCR welcomes applications from those candidates with a refugee or stateless background. To be considered, the applicants must:

Be a recent graduate* or present student in a graduate or undergraduate school program from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO (link to check the details is available on the official call).
Have completed a minimum of 2 years of undergraduate programs in a field related to, or of interest to, the work of the organization.
Not have immediate relatives (mother, father, sister, or brother) working for UNHCR as their staff members or any contract type or as an affiliate by the time the application is submitted.
Not have exhausted the maximum cumulative internship period with UNHCR, including any type of previous (prior) internships (eight months for full-time and twelve months for part-time).
Have a command of the English language (the proficiency must be at minimum B2 level).

Note: Recent graduates are those candidates who are considered to be candidates who have completed their studies within 2 years of applying for an internship with UNHCR.

Financial Coverage for the UNHCR Internship Program 2025

There will be food and local transportation allowance plus travel costs. Interns who do not get any financial assistance from an outside party will obtain an allowance to partially help support costs relevant to local transportation, food, and living expenditures.

Unless offered/provided or paid by their sponsoring entities, UNHCR will reimburse interns who are engaged from a location outside the country of the duty station for return travel expenses to/from the duty station by the most economical route (which will be available), irrespective of the journey’s duration. Visa arrangements will entirely be the responsibility of the interns, and the interns will also be responsible for visa costs or related visa costs.
