Information Regarding the University of British Columbia Public Scholars Award

These are among the best doctoral scholarships in Canada. Each year, the university offers funding for up to approximately 30 new students from all faculties at UBC (University of British Columbia), and around 5 scholars from all faculties at UBCO.

Those scholars chosen for the cohort will be eligible for renewal funding for a second year. The opportunity is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students. UBC Vancouver doctoral students (PhD, EdD, DMA, including part-time PhD students) in years 1-5 and UBC Okanagan doctoral students in years 1-5.

Interested applicants must have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study as of 31^st August 2025
They must be registered in a UBC doctoral program as of 1^st September 2025
Those candidates who are in their 6^th year (48 to 60 months of doctoral study) will be accepted only in exceptional circumstances. They should receive approval from the PSI before they submit their applications

The following are the requirements for all funded students:

They should submit a report at the end of their first (and if applicable, second) year of funding
Attendance at and engagement with PSI events and scholars’ network
Their work’s presentation at a Network event, PhDs Go Public

Funding Availability

There is funding offered under the University of British Columbia Public Scholars Award. Awards of up to $10,000 are offered to support collaborative/innovative scholarship that the students would otherwise be unable to pursue. The offered funding can be used for:

A research allowance (including allowance for travel or professional development related to the scholarly work)
Student stipend provided that the student’s present funding source would not allow the alternative project(s)

Note: Those PSI scholars who are in good standing will be eligible to apply for a one-time award renewal of up to $10,000. There will be a separate application for it that can be submitted during any funding period.
