Information Regarding the University of Reading PhD Studentships

Your base will be in Reading, and you will be a part of a student cohort that this doctoral training programme will equip you with dexterities (skills) in theory for climate science, scientific computing, (geo) physical sciences, data analysis, and statistics.

The areas of the PhD project will be split into numerical modelling of fundamental oceanic, mathematical theory, and atmospheric processes, analysis of data and assimilation with climate and weather models, and mathematical applications relevant to the response to climate change.
Details About the MFC CDT Programme
As far as the MFC CDT Programme is concerned, it will involve:
- The University of Reading, Imperial College London, and the University of Southampton
- Ocean, weather, and climate services, including the National Centre for Earth Observations, the National Oceanography Centre, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and the UK Meteorological Office
- Industrial partners from key sectors of the United Kingdom economy, notably energy, insurance, marine, and water sectors.
Note: It has to be noted that the candidates should make separate applications to each of the three institutions that they are interested in.
Funding Availability Under the University of Reading PhD Studentships
It needs to be noted that unless the candidates have their own funding for the full studentship, enter No for ‘Funding secured already’ and, in the second box on the application, they need to mention they wish to apply for a ‘PhD studentship in Mathematics for Our Future Climate’.
There is no need to supply the supervisor’s name or the project title. The duration for the MFC CDT Programme will be four years. It will include:
- Home-level PhD tuition fees
- There will be a full stipend (2025/26 stipend will be £22,780 per year) with an annual increase in line with the UKRI
- There will be a generous allowance to support research-relevant activities, like attending workshops and conferences
- Recipients will be offered new laptops
Remember, those who do not meet the requirements for home will be classified as international students. For the studentship, international students are welcome to apply, but they have to meet the cost of the difference between the international fees (the CDT has no funds for this) and the home tuition fees. International students are also required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge and any visa costs.
