Information Regarding the British Council 90^th Anniversary Research Fellowships

These research fellowships are offered to celebrate the British Council’s 90^th anniversary, as the organization celebrates its 90^th anniversary in 2024. The British Council delightedly announces a new research partnership between the British Council and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh.

Under this new partnership, two postdoctoral fellowships with a duration of 12 months are being offered for international early-career researchers. Interested researchers are advised to apply by 26^th July 2024. These fellowships will commence in January 2025.

This is a 3 years partnership. Therefore, over the coming years, additional rounds of fellowships commencing in January 2026 and January 2027 will be conferred as part of the same program.

The British Council 90^th Anniversary Research Fellowships at the University of Edinburgh are open to postdoctoral researchers based in any ODA–recipient country where the British Council operates (check details and list of the countries on page number 139 in this list).

The fellows will spend the period of first 10 months of their fellowships at IASH followed by up to 2 months based in their home countries focused on knowledge exchange and dissemination in collaboration with the British Council.

Subject Focus and Eligibility for the British Council 90^th Anniversary Research Fellowships

The British Council supports peace and prosperity by building /generating connections, understanding, and trust between people in the United Kingdom and countries around the world.

These fellowships are early-career fellowships which means the applicants have to be within 7 years of completion of their PhDs.
Applicants have to be based in an ODA-recipient country where the British Council operates and they need to be qualified to undertake postdoctoral-level research for the fellowship.
The topics for research need to be related to the areas of priority across education, arts, and the English language that are outlined in the British Council strategy, and to the areas (fields) of cross-cutting strategic British Council interests like international development and peace building, international relations and soft power, and cultural relations and cultural diplomacy.

Funding (Financial Coverage)

Successful fellowship candidates will receive a bursary of £2,500 per month plus travel expenditures as well as desk space along with library access and academic mentoring as part of the vibrant scholarly community of visiting fellows at The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities.

Throughout the fellowships, fellows will also be expected to engage closely with the British Council with the option to consume their time in a British Council office in their home countries as part of the knowledge exchange component. They will also be engaged in visits to the UK offices.
