Information About the International Essay Contest for Young People

This program (annual contest) is an activity within UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs framework. This annual contest is organized by the Goi Peace Foundation under the auspices of The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, Japan Private High School Federation, Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, Japan Broadcasting Corporation, Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education, and Nikkei Inc respectively. The International Essay Contest for Young People is supported by Seiko Group Corporation, Plus Corporation.

The Theme of the Contest

This year’s theme of the contest is ‘My Experience of Overcoming Conflict’. Conflicts around us (in the world, etc.) occur for several reasons including differences in values and opinions. Have you witnessed an experience of overcoming a conflict that you happened to be involved in? What did you learn from that experience? How do you would like to make use of what you learned, for society and your own life?

Guidelines for the Contest (International Essay Competition 2024)

  • All nationalities are welcome to participate in the contest.
  • There are no participation charges.
  • As of June 15, 2024, the applicant’s age should be up to 25 years old. Essays can be submitted in one of these categories – children (ages up to 14), and youth (ages 15 to 25).
  • Applicants may write essays in 700 words or less in English or French, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese. Essays have to be typed. At the top of the first page, the applicant’s name, email address, and essay title should be included.
  • Since there are no specific rules to be followed in formatting the essay (such as size, font style, line space, etc.). therefore, essays have to be submitted in either PDF format or MS Word (Doc/Dox files). It should be noted that the applicant/participant’s name, email address, and essay title will not be included in the word count limit.
  • Youth directors and teachers could submit a collection of essays from their group or class by generating/creating an ‘account for school/organization entrant’ available on the online registration page.
  • Remember, only one entry per person/applicant is accepted, confirmation of receipt of essays will not be provided.
  • It must be noted that essays have to be unpublished and need to be original. Entries with plagiarized content or content created by generative AI like ChatGPT will be rejected.
  • Co-authored essays will not be entertained/accepted thus, the essays have to be written by one person.
  • By submitting the essay, the applicant/participant permits the organizer to publish it in any medium. Ownership of the essay will remain with the entrant/participant.
  • Entries have to be submitted online. If you are interested, you need to send your essay online by visiting the registration page and then follow the required steps accordingly. Postal mail or email entries will not be accepted.

Benefits (Awards) for the International Essay Contest for Young People

The following benefits or awards will be provided/offered in the Children and Youth Categories respectively:

First Prize – Prize of 100,000 Yen (approximately US$660 as of February 2024), certificate and gift – 1 entrant.

Second Prize – Prize of 50,000 Yen (approximately US$330 as of February 2024) and gift – 3 entrants.

Third Prize – Certificate and gift – 5 entrants

Honorable Mention – Certificate and gift – 25 entrants

  • First to third prize winners will be invited to an online Winners Gathering (to be held online).
  • If applicable, additional awards such as the School Incentive Award, and Best School Award will be offered.
  • On the official website, all prize winners will be announced on 31st October 2024.
  • Gifts and certificates will be mailed to the winners in January 2025. Individual inquiries regarding contest results will not be answered.

Deadline to Submit the Applications

Interested youngsters should submit their entries by 15th June 2024.
